To become an au pair or host family in New Zealand, certain criteria must be met.

Requirements for Au Pairs

To qualify as an au pair in New Zealand, you must meet the following conditions:
  • Aged between 18 and 30 years old.

  • Unmarried and without children.

  • Good knowledge of English.

  • At least 4,200 NZD in your account and able to afford travel costs.

  • Have not previously been to New Zealand on a Working Holiday Visa.

  • Citizen of one of the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong (HKSAR), Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, Turkey, Uruguay, USA, Vietnam.

Requirements for Host Families

Host families in New Zealand must meet the following criteria:
  • At least one child under 18 lives in the household.

  • Provide a private room for the au pair.

  • Expect the au pair to help with childcare and light housework.

  • Speak English daily in the household.

  • The au pair must have a different nationality than the host family.
