To become an au pair or host family in the Netherlands, specific criteria must be fulfilled.

Requirements for Au Pairs

To qualify as an au pair in the Netherlands, you must meet the following conditions:
  • Aged between 18 and 25 years old.

  • Unmarried and without children.

  • This is your first time participating in a cultural exchange as an au pair in the Netherlands.

  • Proficiency in English.

  • Non-European au pairs must provide evidence that they are unmarried and childless.

Requirements for Host Families

Host families in the Netherlands must meet these criteria:
  • At least one child under 18 in the household.

  • No household member requires special care.

  • Provide a private room for the au pair.

  • Willing to welcome a young adult into the family as an equal member for up to one year as part of a cultural exchange.

  • A responsible adult is always available to take over the au pair's duties if needed.

  • The au pair's schedule should not exceed eight hours a day and 30 hours a week, spread over a maximum of 5 days. The au pair can participate in a language course during their free time.

  • Have sufficient income to support the family and the au pair during their stay.
