To become an au pair or host family in Iceland, the following criteria must be met.

Requirements for Au Pairs

To qualify as an au pair in Iceland, you need to meet the following requirements:
  • Aged between 18 and 25 years old.

  • Knowledge of English or Icelandic.

  • Unmarried and without children.

  • Able to afford the trip to Iceland.

  • Interest in Icelandic culture.

  • Not related to the host family.

  • Meet the requirements for an au pair residence permit (applicable to EEA citizens only if the stay exceeds 3 months).

Requirements for Host Families

Host families in Iceland must meet the following criteria:
  • At least one child under the age of 18 living in the household.

  • At least one parent is a citizen of Iceland or has a permanent residence permit.

  • Speak Icelandic and English to ensure communication with the au pair.

  • Provide an individual room for the au pair.

  • Looking to have an au pair join the family on a temporary basis to help with childcare and light household tasks.

  • Not related to the au pair.

  • Facilitate the au pair's attendance at a language course.

  • Able to afford the expenses associated with an au pair stay and the higher household costs.
